📸 5 Tips for Travel Photography

Tip #1: Establish the Shot

Visually telling the story of your adventure starts with conveying an overall sense of the place. You want to create an image that captures the essence of the landscape, the wildlife that calls it home, and what it feels like to be there in that moment.

Tip #2: Be Ready for Action

Capturing wildlife behavior can be challenging when you’re on the move. You can increase your odds of success by setting your camera to burst mode with a fast shutter speed, then pre-focusing where the action is likely to take place. When you capture a sequence of images in burst mode you will be able to select the best one.

Tip #3: Include Elements of Scale

When surrounded by wilderness, the first instinct of many photographers is to try and exclude people from the shot. In some cases, this may be exactly what you’re going for, and in other cases it may not. Including hikers, trees, and landscape formations in your image can add a sense of scale, helping complete the overall ‘feeling’ of the moment.

Tip #4 Embrace the Photographer’s Mantra

Light, Composition, Moment.

Look for interesting light, create a strong composition, then wait for the perfect moment to capture your shot. Travel photography means you’ll be shooting in all kinds of environments, so be patient, think about what you’re trying to capture, and be creative.

Tip #5: Use your Phone!

As the saying goes, the best camera is the one you have with you. For most of us, that means the phone in our pocket. As the quality of phone cameras has improved over the years, their use in mainstream photography has grown exponentially. Don’t be afraid to use for your phone for a video, time-lapse or panoramic image. These can add a ton of flair and excitement to your trip.
